Mummering
Twine, ribbon, muslin, 2019Mummering is a 200 year old pagan house-visiting Christmas tradition practiced in Ireland, parts of the UK, and Newfoundland. Over the 12 days of Christmas, families and groups of friends would dress up and drop into the homes of neighbors. A Guess-Who game would ensue.
Fishing was a huge part of the livelihoods of the people in these coastal regions. This mask explores family heritage, folk traditions, and “women’s” craft.
